Calgary Fire Department Fire Cadets Program Every year, the Calgary Fire Department runs a Fire Cadets program for high school students in Calgary. Over the course of the programme, cadets are trained in basic firefighting skills, which include fire safety awareness, hose handling, fire extinguisher use and the other important skills that firefighters need on the fireground. In addition to the practical aspects of the course, Fire Cadets learn teamwork, professionalism, honesty and respect. Fire Cadets gain a valuable insight into how rewarding it is to work for their community. The Fire Cadet program is a competitive entry program. Of all the students who apply, only 16 will be selected to start their training in February 2009. In order to be selected, you will have to demonstrate your ability to learn, work hard and communicate effectively. Although the selection tests and interviews might sound daunting, the rewards of the program are immense. Not only will you earn high school credits and make new friends, you will also discover a new context for your learning - finding ways to use your skills in math, science, language arts and social studies knowledge. Speaking from my own experience as a firefighter and coast guard officer, that thing about people liking the uniform? It's true. Candidates must be reliable and dependable, I cannot stress this enough. Firefighting is a team sport, if you cannot be relied upon, you will not make the team.Take a good look at your own personal qualities - is your attendance and punctuality record good enough, is your work of a high standard. As a person, do you demonstrate exceptional personal qualities of leadership, pride and professionalism? If you would like to apply for the Fire Cadet program, see Mr Parkinson in Room 9. Applicants must be between 15 and 18 years old by December 31st 2008, and able to commit to the program one night a week for three semesters. (If you are in Grade 12, you can still apply but think carefully about whether you can continue to commit after June 2009). You will need a reference from an adult and clearance from your doctor to apply for the Fire Cadet program. You will also need to pay a $75 registration fee to the Calgary Fire Department at the start of each semester.
