Background information.
Our entrance exam is based on the Canadian Test of Basic Skills, and
takes between 2 and 3 hours to complete, depending on the candidate's
age.
The entrance exam was chosen to highlight a student's potential, and
not what they have already learned. The International School of
Excellence serves a very diverse community, so a basic skills test
gives us a better idea of a child's ability, especially if they have
been educated outside of Canada.

Passing the test.
The International School of Excellence is moving
towards a vey intensive program of academic tuition and personal
enrichment. Our students are expected to strive for excellence in all
aspects of their education and social development.
In order to pass the entrance exam, a student has to have a natural
curiosity for the world around them, innate intelligence and the charm
and charisma to work as a member of a wider community of learners.
The written exam is one part of our entrance criteria. Candidates also
sit an interview with a senior member of staff, and records from
previous schools are also checked to ensure that the student will be a
good ambassador for the school.

|
Preparing for the interview.
Approximately half of the candidates who sit
the written test do not make the necessary grade. Those who do are
asked to attend an interview where they are asked about their future
aspirations, current schooling and social interests.
At this stage of the selection process, candidates need to bring copies
of their school reports dating back no less than two years. If a
student does not have their reports, they will need to bring a letter
of reference from their previous school.

Offer of a place at the school.
All candidates who pass the entrance
exam and are successful at interview will be offered a place at the
school. However, the school is currently over-subscribed, so for some
classes the offer of a place will mean being put on a waiting list.
Once a student is offered a place, we will discuss various options for
tuition fees, and help families apply for scholarships and bursaries as
necessary.

Students who are not offered a place.
A number of students will find
themselves in the position where they are not offered a place at the
International School of Excellence. The entrance exam is challenging,
and the interview process can be daunting, and we understand this.
Students who are not offered a place are free to apply again as many
times as they wish. We do not charge to sit the entrance exam, nor do
we charge for the interview, so there is no financial cost to families
seeking to get their child into an excellent school.
Students who are borderline on their entrance exam can apply for
conditional acceptance to the school. We will schedule an interview
with them, and if they demonstrate potential at interview, they will be
offered a condition place, based on sitting the entrance exam at some
point in the future. Students who are conditionally accepted will only
be placed on any waiting list once they have fulfilled the conditions
of acceptance.
Students who do not meet the requirements for a conditional place
may sit the entrance exam again, but they need to wait one month before
re-applying. This is to give them a chance to go over the results of
their initial assessment so that they can work on improving their
skills for next time.
